Introducing m1

m1 is our first model: type a sentence, get a 64×64 pixel-art sprite with crisp edges and a tidy palette, ready to drop into a game. It's in preview today, in the Studio and through the API.

m1 drawing four prompts, live from its 40 denoising steps. Real output.

01Meet m1

Making game art is slow, and pixel art is slower: every sprite is hundreds of hand-placed squares. We built m1 to do the first draft. Describe a creature, an item, a plant, a building or a tile and it draws one, at the size pixel artists actually use, with hard edges and a limited palette instead of the blurry, almost-pixel look most image models give you.

m1 is a preview. It's still learning, and it has clear gaps, which we list below. We'd rather show you an honest early version than a polished demo.

02How it draws

m1 starts every sprite as pure static and sharpens it, bit by bit, until it matches your words. Drag the slider to watch it happen, on real frames from m1:

Real frames from m1 for the selected prompt.

You're in charge of how loosely it listens

Creativity has three settings. Strict sticks closely to your words, classic is the everyday middle, and wild takes liberties, which is great for ideas you haven't pinned down yet. Every sprite also has a seed: send the same prompt, creativity and seed and you get the same sprite back, so you can find one you like and keep it.

When it's done, m1 tidies up like a pixel artist would: every pixel fully solid or fully see-through, a small palette, and everything lined up on the grid. No blur, no smudge.

03Made with care

m1 learned from our own dataset, made by our own artists. No scraped artwork.

We also check every version of m1 to make sure it draws new sprites, not copies of what it learned from. A model that memorises can look impressive while doing nothing new; that's not what we want to hand you.

Every sprite m1 gives you is a fresh drawing.

04Good at, not yet

From our own spot checks across about 200 prompts. These aren't a formal benchmark; they're what you'll notice first.

SUBJECTHOW IT DOESEXAMPLES (FIRST TRY)
Known gaps. People are the weak spot: ask for "a girl in a red dress" or "a chef" and m1 often draws an object instead. Faces, hands and held items are smudgy at this size, and extras in a prompt (sunglasses, a crown) are often left out. All three are at the top of our list.

05Try it

m1 is available today in preview. Make sprites in the Studio, or call it from your own code with an API key from the dev portal. The preview is free, with a daily allowance per account.

06Field notes from the team

Our mascots helped test m1. Their reviews are, for legal reasons, entirely made up.

  1. Measured in our playground: about 5 seconds from pressing Generate to a finished sprite.
